Mitel builds 80-channel light chip
The Canadian Mitel Corporation says it has working prototypes of a chip that boosts the number of data channels available in one optical-fiber light stream from the standard 16 to 80. If true, this "breakthrough," based on Mitel's reportedly superior ability to control the layering and etching of glass on a silicon base, will lower the cost of optical networks and dramatically increase fiber-optic network efficiencies.
