Microsoft: More Educated Consumers Pirate Less
While piracy is one thing that is unlikely to be gone from the software industry any time soon, Microsoft is expressing an attitude that shows the company is more confident against the problem than ever.
Besides its WGA protection schemes, Microsoft says that an educated IT market is what's helping curb piracy. Speaking at a Windows 7 launch in the Philippines, Microsoft Philippines Inc., managing director John Bessey said, "We were surprised by the demand for Windows 7 [in the Philippines] not just in number but also the good feedback for new users," according to Philstar.
Bessey said that Microsoft was devoting more resources to making the public aware of the dangers in using pirated and cracked versions of Windows, which might be more susceptible to viruses and malware.
Of course, discounted licenses and upgrades are also good ways to entice users to go legit.

"Smart kids dont do drugs / pirate Win7!"
Being a college kid I know a lot of people who do pirate. 3 people I know (thats including myself) Actually bought Win7 with the student offer (£30) Which I thought an amazing deal. But the rest of the people in my class (11 people) pirated win7, even when the prices are so low for students.
@lewis57:
I find piracy to be a habit of sort also. It takes time for one that has been pirating for years to start being legit. It's not done over night atleast.
If getting their software for free makes them think im an idiot fine. I think those who pay are the fools.
I never pay full price for software. Theres always a way around the cost...
The last operating system I bought was windows 98...It just bugs me how they exploit the customer/gamers seeing as the majority of games are exclusive to windows. If only more vendors would would make applications with versions to other platforms, M$ would be forced to make prices reasonable, and allot of people would consider their OS an option, possible ruling out a large amount of piracy..
