Microsoft sinks "Neptune," whistles up new NT
Microsoft has shelved plans for "Neptune," a consumer-oriented version of Windows based on the NT kernel, opting instead on a new version of the operating system that combines consumer and business features.
Code-named Whistler, the new version will replace development of an OS variation called Odyssey, which had been billed as the first full-fledged upgrade to Windows 2000.
Microsoft officials refuse to publicly discuss details of Whistler, but sources expect the version to contain many of the user interface and back-end service improvements that were slated originally for Neptune.
