Microsoft Ordered to Withdraw Advertising by South Africa

by - source: Tom's Hardware

The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa has ordered Microsoft to withdraw an advertisement that the ASA has labeled as "unsubstantiated and misleading." The ASA order is over an ad published by Microsoft that claims Microsoft's software will lead to the extinction of hackers. The advertisement shows a woolly mammoth, a saber tooth tiger, a dodo and a hacker, with ad text stating that Microsoft's software provides its customers' data more security than if it were inside a safe. The advertisement was withdrawn after a journalist complained that Microsoft's software is full of vulnerabilities. The ASA asked Microsoft to provide information as to its software security and then have it substantiated independently. Microsoft provided the documentation and countered that the advertisement did not intend to mislead customers, but was a tongue-in-cheek, humorous ad stating that its software could threaten the survival of hackers.
