Microsoft moves to sell Corel shares
Microsoft Corp. has filed its intention with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to sell its ownership in Corel Corp. The move does not require the stock be sold but is necessary if the decision is made to divest of any or all of the shares. Microsoft says it has not committed to the sale but analysts believe the move may be under consideration as part of a strategy to deflect investigations, by both US and Canadian antitrust authorities, into Microsoft's purchase of the important provider of Linux software. Some have theorized that the motive was to cripple Corel's Linux side as part of a scheme to slow down the growth of the Linux operating system.
