Microsoft to Show New Search Tech to Fight Google
Word has it we’re going to see a completely new version of Microsoft's Live Search at this year’s D: All Things Digital conference next week.
All Things Digital is hosted by the Wall Street Journal and the newspaper today reports that Microsoft will show off a new version of its Internet search engine, a project codenamed Kumo, at the show.
The Redmond company thinks that it has been playing second fiddle to Google when it comes to search for too long and rather than breathing new life into rumors about a Yahoo! acquisition, it seems the company has decided to improve its own search engine. According to the WSJ (which cites people familiar with the matter) Microsoft has been privately testing the search engine within the company for months.
The gist of it is Kumo aims to help us cut down on the amount of time we spend on the web, sifting through links that are of no use to us. The WSJ gives an example of the new technology like a certain model of car. Kumo would throw up results but grouped into different categories like listings for parts, used car listings, online discussion forums and videos showing the vehicle.
While it’s nice to see Microsoft improving its products, we can’t honestly say this will drag us away from Google. What do you guys think? A lot of you said that when Google burped last week, you were forced to use Yahoo! or Live Search. Can you see yourself turning your back on Google by choice, or is this too little too late on Microsoft’s part? Let us know!

Some competition would be great.
Google has become the best for a reason. They sought for what people would want on a search engine and implemented those functionalities.
From times to times I probe the other engines and they're still far away. I'm always doing researches on the net and everytime I try live search or yahoo I get disappointed with what I get. The results don't have much accuracy and the way they're displayed (although a bit subjective) makes it look like something is missing.
If Microsoft can do some research, they can do it too and I hope so.
That's the only way we're seeing engines evolving.
We're not wanting google forever.
I think I will stick with google for a few reasons:
1. clean way of presenting the results
2. accurate
3. I somehow get this "feeling" that LiveSearch and Yahoo just don't show me what I want... or what is actually there...
Is this the first symptom of being brainwashed?
Back to subject though - Nah, I don't think MS stand a chance on this... they don't care about the users - they get this and that many hits just because it is a default startup page on a browser installed by default on a default OS... Google evolves around users... MS evolves about money... Or at least that's my opinion - correct me if I'm wrong?
Anything to avoid having to wade through pages and pages of useless results would be an improvement on Google.
Honestly, if google doesnt work, i don't even bother using the web. The other engines are THAT bad. Live is just horendous. If you even google something straightforward in both engines, you will imediately see different listings. If live was any good they'd be similer results. If i would recomend google did anything, it would be to have a 'beta' search button, where they could deploy inovative techniques for user feedback. There should always be a place for 'google classic' and google know it, every other overhaul hotmail does is awful. Change isnt always good.
