Microsoft fears Napster

by - source: Tom's Hardware

A Microsoft spokesman has made it clear that the company is opposed to file sharing technologies like Napster and Gnutella if they are to be used for pirating software. Testifying before a congressional panel, Microsoft's director of federal government affairs indicated that the software industry at large is alarmed that file sharing systems have already been used to illegally trade software. "We've seen our software on Napster and we anticipate this trend to continue."

The trading of programs on Napster and similar systems has also alarmed network security administrators who fear that ways will be found by virus writers to exploit computer access gained by downloaders. Napster personnel say there are no known security risks associated with their system but analysts point out that the same was previously said about Microsoft email systems.
