Micron launches its first megapixel CMOS sensor: Specifications point to CCD quality
Announced on Sunday, March 2 to coincide with the start of the PMA 2003 show in Las Vegas, Micron's new 1.3-megapixel CMOS sensor is set to disrupt many perceptions about the quality battle between CCD and CMOS sensors. Targeting digital still and video cameras and PC cameras, the new MI-1300 sensor is manufactured on Micron's own 0.18-micron DRAM process at its Fab 3 in Boise, Idaho. The company claims that the sensor can achieve CCD-level image quality while keeping the advantages of CMOS sensor technology, and the specifications seem to support this claim. The MI-1300 is the first in a family of megapixel products, and higher-resolution devices will follow it later this year.
