Mexico City to get urban Wi-Fi

Mexico City (Mexico) - Mexico City’s new mayor has promised city-wide wireless Internet by 2008. When Mayor Marcelo Ebrard was elected back in December, he promised sweeping improvements to the city’s infrastructure. The wireless service would first be available to government offices and would eventually be expanded to the public.

China’s ZTE Corporation will build the wireless network that will connect the 8.7 million residents of the city. At first, the network will link government offices, schools and the city’s thousands of surveillance cameras. If that is successful, the network will then service regular citizens and tourists for free.

There are no further details about the speed or security of the network.
