Maxtor's 160 GB DiamondMax D540X and D740X Drives
You can't be too rich, too thin, or have too big a hard drive. Well, the "rich" part probably isn't going to happen this year and the "thin" part is more the stuff of New Years resolutions, but it you want a big old hard drive, Maxtor's got `em. The 40 GB per platter DiamondMax Plus D740X is a 7200-RPM hard drive with the new Fast Drive Ultra ATA/133 technology and the DiamondMax D540X is a 5400-RPM hard drive with a 160 GB capacity along with the Ultra ATA/133 interface. Offered in capacities up to 80 GB, the DiamondMax Plus D740X is a 7200-RPM hard drive that gives you the option of either a traditional ball bearing motor or the quiet fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor of Maxtor's Quiet Drive Technology (QDT) Plus. The 160 GB operates at 5400 RPM, and Maxtor says it can hold 160 hours of compressed digital video. The DiamondMax D540X will be integrated into Maxtor's new enterprise-class file server, the MaxAttach NAS 6000, which was just announced at Networld+Interop (N+I) in Atlanta. The Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X is priced at $249.95 and the DiamondMax D540X will be available in early October with an MSRP of $399.95. Each drive will be bundled with a Promise Technology ATA controller card to allow Ultra ATA/133 interface speed. The new hard drives and controller cards are also backward compatible with earlier ATA technologies. These bundles are available to select geographic locations through October 2001. Starting in November, Maxtor will offer the Ultra ATA/133 card as a standalone product.
