Malaysia To Crack Down On Piracy Again

by - source: Tom's Hardware

In Malaysia, officials are launching another crack down on illegal software. The enforcement operation, which has been code named "Operation Genuine," will involve over 300 officers from various departments. Experts from the Business Software Alliance (BSA) will also be on hard to represent the interests of U.S. software publishers.

In a similar sweep last year, officials were able to capture more than 2,000 street vendors with pirated copies of CDs, VCDs, and DVDs. Those that are found guilty of selling pirated software can be fined as much as $2,631 and/or be jailed for as much as five years, depending on their level of involvement.

Officials in the U.S. have gone on record stating that Malaysia has good piracy laws, but that Malaysia has never been very aggressive in enforcing them.
