LSI just forked out $851 million to purchase C-Cube Microsystems, making C-Cube a wholly-owned subsidiary of LSI. LSI picked up more than 90 percent of the shares of C-Cube common stock. In the merger, each remaining share of C-Cube common stock was converted into the right to receive 0.79 of a share of LSI Logic common stock. C-Cube is heavily into technologies that include set-top boxes, DVD, personal video recording, recordable DVD, residential gateway stuff, and streaming video. LSI has similar interests but a much more powerful infrastructure (sales, marketing, and the like). The companies' combined talents could make them a force to be reckoned with in the realm of consumer set-top boxes and related technology.
