Linux for PlayStation
You may not need to learn how to speak Japanese to develop for Sony's Playstation 2 under Linux. On Friday, we learned from Cnet that a Czech company called Blokman Trading has released a test version of the Linux 2.4 kernel for the PlayStation (not yet PS2) console. The company said it will make its Linux port available for free as a download. Sony will release its own Linux development kit for Playstation 2 this summer, but it will be limited to 1,000 units and will only work with the Japanese PS2 box. The Sony Linux for PS2 kit will include 40GB hard drive, a keyboard, and a mouse. Blokman thinks that its Linux port could allow folks to turn their game consoles into low-priced PCs. The test version of the kernel is supposed to be available from www.runix.ru . Unfortunately, at the time of this story's posting, we've been unable to get to the site. If you have any additional info, do tell.
