Linux desktop KDE 2.0 released
Members of the K Desktop Environment (KDE) Team have announced the release of version 2.0 of their user interface for Linux and Unix, known as Kopernicus. Hundreds of open-source programmers, according to the group, have contributed to the re-engineering of the KDE 1 environment. KDE is one of two major Linux/Unix interfaces, the other being Gnome (GNU Network Object Model Environment), which has been endorsed by more large companies. Supporters of the KDE effort have deliberately positioned the interface as less subject to corporate pressures.
Kopernicus includes its own browser, file manager, integrated office suite as well as separate components for both developers and end users.
