Light-emitting silicon breakthrough
Scientists from the University of Surrey, UK, have succeeded in forcing silicon to produce light at room temperatures, a major breakthrough in chip design because it enables the use of smaller and faster optical circuits. Moreover, the light-producing devices can be built into chips with little modification to existing fabs.
