LG sues Quanta over DVD patents
Milwaukee (WI) - LG Electronics has filed a lawsuit against Quanta Computer, the world’s largest manufacturer of notebook PCs, alleging its use of DVD components is a blatant patent infringement.
LG accuses Quanta of infringing on four of its patents that relate to DVD technology in the manufacturing of its computers. Quanta is a provider of laptops to HP, Dell, and other big-name PC companies.
LG, which claims to own 5000 international patents linked to DVD technology, is seeking monetary damages as well as an injunction against Quanta.
Quants spokesperson Jason Lin told the Wall Street Journal, "We are looking into the lawsuit, as we have only received it this morning. We will defend our rights regarding this lawsuit."
This lawsuit will be piled onto another patent infringement suit between the two companies. In 2000, LG filed suit against Quanta over other patent issues. A District Court ruled in favor of Quanta, but an appeals court overturned that ruling, bringing the case back to the docket.
