Legend Computer Plans Foreign Expansion
China's largest computer manufacturer, The Legend Group, has announced that it is planning to expand into markets outside China, most likely into Europe and the U.S. A Legend spokesperson said that Legend's sales goal is to increase sales from 7% currently to 25%-30% by 2006. While the Mainland China demand for home computers is increasing, wages in China remain low. The price of a desktop computer can take typical families two to three years of careful savings. Price discounting there is thus cutthroat and competitive. Legend Computer was begun in 1984 by the Mainland China government, but some operations were spun off in 1994, with the government of China currently owning 65% of Legend's parent company.
