LED backlighting for large-size panels to depend on cost reduction
Although Taiwan-based panel makers AU Optronics (AUO), Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and HannStar Display are showcasing LCD TVs with LED backlight modules at the ongoing FPD Taiwan 2005, LED backlighting is not expected to be adopted for large-size applications until 2007, as the price gap between LEDs and CCFLs still needs to narrow, according to LED maker Lite-On Technology. Everlight Electronics also stated that the penetration rate will accelerate once the prices for high-power LEDs drop.
