The 21" CRT display that pretty much turns my desk into a monitor stand may have set me back $1,300 four years ago, but I still haven't found a compelling reason to replace it, so I guess I got my money's worth. LCDs big enough to do stuff like page layout and design (or CAD) just haven't become affordable enough to tempt me to reclaim my desk space. A second desk is a much cheaper solution if I need more desktop real estate. Those skinny little displays have made headway in replacing their older siblings, however, as evidenced by a report put out by DisplaySearch. The firm's latest "Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report" says that Q2'01 worldwide LCD monitor shipments rose 23% over the same quarter last year and 131% year-to-year to reach a record 2.9 million units, exceeding expectations by 3%. LCD monitor penetration of the global desktop monitor market reached a record high 12.4% on a unit basis and 29.3% on a revenue basis with revenues up 3% Q/Q and 56% Y/Y to $2.4 billion. While LCD monitor shipments gained momentum, CRT shipments fell 13% Q/Q and 11% Y/Y to 20.1 million units. On a revenue basis, CRT monitor revenues declined 11% Y/Y and 15% Q/Q to $5.6 billion. In addition to telling us all about LCD monitor shipments by region and by size in units and revenues, the report also reveals LCD monitor shipments by interface type, viewing angle technology, resolution, channel and application and forecasts the information forward on an eight-quarter basis. It also reveals shipments by LCD monitor OEM, panel supplier, and controller IC supplier. The controller IC supplier section includes shipments, revenues and ASPs by suppliers for eight different controller IC configurations at four different resolutions. The 300-page report is available in English and Japanese in printed and electronic format for (gulp) $4,495.00. However, DisplaySearch has a bunch of free info on its site , so you might want to check it out even if your not ready to break out your checkbook for the complete report. Until I can replace this old dinosaur CRT for under $1,000, I'm still hanging tight.
