NEC offers a different option called Labelflash, with which labels are created using the DVD burner's laser. Unfortunately, this technology is not yet available in the United States. LightScribe and Labelflash, however, require different blanks and are not mutually compatible.

NEC claims Labelflash can print graphics with up to 256 shades of brightness and offer a faster printing process compared to LightScribe. Labelflash is based on the Yamaha Disc T@2, with the added capability of printing on the top as well as the data side.

Hardware

Only NEC offers Labelflash burners.

Only a handful of DVD burners support NEC's adapted Labelflash technology. Labelflash also imprints the top of discs, similar to LightScribe. The biggest difference is that the discs are blue on top, thus providing greater contrast with the printed images. Unfortunately, NEC is the only manufacturer that offers burners, discs and software for Labelflash.
