I always wonder why people use KDE. It's even more bloated than GNOME but doesn't look and feel half as good...
Hmmm... beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I've always preferred KDE over Gnome as Gnome seems over simplified to me. Each to their own I guess.

Oversimplified how? They're both every bit as customizable as the other and both offer all the functions you need.
I still prefer Gnome
Recently I switched from Unity in Ubuntu to Kubuntu with KDE and couldn't be happier. before Unity I've been using GNOME on Ubuntu and after being frustrated with Unity I also tried GNOME3 on Fedora. Just as frustrating experience as Unity. So in the end I decided to give KDE a chance for the first time and boy it really pleasantly surprised me. None other desktop comes even close in flexibility and reconfigurability and KDE looks damn good. I also find KDE applications to be better than GNOME/Unity counterparts. There is still a lot to discover and learn about KDE and I'm really happy exploring it. Oh and I see there are already KDE 4.7 packages for Kubuntu out so it's time for upgrade
I have used a few different KDE mods - some of them were actually pretty good if you like windows vista/7-like UIs but the standard KDE was hardly intuitive and did not play nicely with slower hardware. Gnome was always my favourite GUI but I'm not a fan of Gnome 3 (or Unity for that matter). My next GNU/Linux install is going to be Ubuntu studio with Gnome, but I don't know what I'll be choosing after that...
