JPEG2000 For Still Cameras
JPEG2000, a new, wavelet-based digital still-imaging compression format will be out on the street in silicon next week when Analog Devices launches the first accelerator chip compliant with the spec. The JPEG2000 specification offers new compression techniques intended to provide higher resolution along with scalability to deliver image content of varying qualities from within the same file. The standard is also supposed to reduce the occurrence of errors when images are transmitted in noisy environments, and allows for the inclusion of non-image data in a file. According to EETimes.com , which has a detailed story, chip makers such as TI and Philips are also working on JPEG2000 ICs. At least two companies - Image Power and LuraTech - are offering JPEG2000 development environments.
