Japanese consortium to challenge Windows
In a direct challenge to the dominance of Microsoft Windows, a group of Japanese electronic appliance and computer makers have teamed up to develop new operating-system software based on the Linux system.
Known as Embedded Linux Consortium, the 24-member group includes Toshiba, NEC, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi and Canon, and will develop the new software to link products such as audio and visual equipment, cellular phones and car navigation equipment.
