Samsung YP-60V: Jog To Music

Ad

With its Yepp Sport, Samsung is targeting athletic types who love music. With its shock-resistant plastic case, this audio player can keep up with its owner during just about any physical activity, thanks to its armband. Since it's not waterproof, though, you should avoid taking it along on canoe or skiing trips. On the other hand, it's ideal for joggers or people who work out on a stationary bike. And this unit has more than sturdiness going for it to make it ideal for sports: It can also serve as a stopwatch and even has Fitness Tracking/Progress software for keeping track of your performance. On the audio player, before and after each session, you press the sports button and select which factor should be tracked - heart rate or the number of calories burned. Finger pressure on a sensor near the headphone outlet takes your pulse. The next time you synchronize with the PC, the results are sent to the Manager. The software then indicates the performance progress made since the last session. The system is not fancy, but proves to be fairly effective... provided you can manage to actually take your pulse, that is. The sensor required an average of three tries to pick up our heartbeat.

These athletic considerations, unfortunately, have led Samsung to make a few concessions with the primary purpose of its unit - playing music. The YP-60V is shipped with a special set of sports earphones which don't fit everyone well and whose sound quality is not exceptional. They muffle the highs as well as the lows. And the headphone outlet is too narrow and requires you to use an adapter if you want to use other earphones. Which is a shame, because that's what you need to do to fully appreciate the sound quality of this player, which incidentally is quite good. Another problem: The interface is not very user-friendly. You need to fumble around a good deal to go from one menu to another or simply find how to adjust the equalizer.
