The Display

I hate those rotten finger prints on the display. The display is designed so that you can’t see the fingerprints if you hold it just right. Fortunately, just right is pretty near the perfect viewing angle. However, sometimes fingerprints do show while I’m using my iPhone and I wish the display wasn’t such a fingerprint magnet. Of course, all I have to do is drag out the display cleaner and fingerprints are gone. That’s real display cleaner, not some kind of virtual cleaner dragged from some special place in the iPhone’s user interface.

Oh, yes, there are still no scratches on my iPhone display and yesterday I accidentally put it in the same pocket as my gigantic wad of keys.

Removing The SIM Card

I was wondering how you remove the SIM card. I thought it might be locked up inside the iPhone. No, it’s very easy to remove, just push the end of an untwisted paperclip into the little hole on top of the phone and out comes the SIM card. So, the phone should be easy to switch to another carrier either legitimately or through a bit of hacking.

AT&T Authorization Problems

I reported that using iTunes to replace my Blackberry with the iPhone on my AT&T account was a breeze. Well, the breeze got a little hot and turned into a very strong wind when I saw my AT&T bill. I was charged for both Blackberry and iPhone data services for the coming month. Dreaded AT&T Customer Service says I’ll get a credit down the road, but since I switched before the end of the month, I had expected to be charged only for iPhone data services. Sigh.

Cases Galore

I’m looking for a vertical flip case for my iPhone. You know the kind ? You hold the phone vertically and open a snap at the bottom (front or back, depending on the case) and the flap opens upward. They’re nice because they protect the entire phone including the display and expose all necessary parts when open.

Apple currently doesn’t offer a good vertical flip case for the iPhone. However, there are already a ton of vendors on the Internet with all kinds of cases, including some horizontal flip cases. I like the one from Pima.

Conclusions

As I begin to better understand my iPhone, I continue to be pretty happy with it. It has shown very good battery life, especially in phone mode. Its camera is much better than I first thought. I’m liking the graphical keyboard better and better, especially with all the tricks Apple built into the phone. Web browsing with Safari is better than anything I’ve ever seen on a smartphone and frankly better than some Web browser implementations for workstations. And, look at all those iPhone cases already or almost already for sale. Apple didn’t make the same mistake with the iPhone as it did with the iPod, where cases came long after easily scratched iPods like the nano came to market.

A few things trouble me about the current iPhone implementation. The worst is the apparent problem with IMAP email. It needs to be fixed now. My other two concerns relate to the iPhone’s fingerprint susceptible display and the rather messy way AT&T handled the financial part of my transition from a Blackberry to the iPhone. Neither of the latter two issues presents great problems, but it would be nice if Apple would issue something other than just the cleaning cloth that comes with the iPhone for erasing those fingerprints and if AT&T would fix the way it bills for data services so that you’re not charged for both data services for your previous smartphone and data services for the iPhone.
