Iomega rolls out two Mac only drives
Iomega, a company famous for making portable drives, has introduced two new drives for Macintosh users. The big UltraMax desktop drive has an impressive 1 TB of capacity while the portable Iomega ’Black’ drive can hold 120 GB. Both drives include EMC’s Retrospect Express backup software.
The UltraMax is basically your standard 1TB external drive with both FireWire and USB 2.0 ports. It also has a built-in USB 2.0 hub to connect other devices. The drive operates in RAID 0 (Striping) mode by default, but can be switched to RAID 1 Mirroring for data backup. The Iomega Black drive is a small bus-powered hard drive with USB and Firewire connectors. The drive doesn’t require an external power source and spins at 5400 RPM.
While the UltraMax is initially formatted in the Mac HFS+ file system, Iomega says buyers can use the drive on a PC if they reformat the drive to the NTFS or FAT32 filesystems. The Iomega Black portable drive will work with PCs without reformatting.
The Iomega UltraMax 1TB drive is currently available for around $500, while the Iomega Black 120GB drive sells for $190.
