Internet Explorer 10 to Ignore Windows Vista

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Talk to the hand because the Vista don't understand.

If you're running Windows Vista and you're an Internet Explorer faithful user, then IE9 will be the end of the road for you. Computerworld has confirmed with Microsoft that Internet Explorer 10 is meant for Windows 7 and newer.

Windows Vista and XP users trying to install the new IE10 platform preview released earlier this week will get the error message: "Windows Internet Explorer Platform Preview does not support any operating system earlier than Windows 7." Microsoft said that this would not change for the final release of IE10.

Even though Windows 7 shares much of its code foundation with Windows Vista, it seems that Microsoft is doing what it can to push ahead to get everyone one the latest operating system.

"Windows Vista customers have a great browsing experience with IE9, but in building IE10 we are focused on continuing to drive the kind of innovation that only happens when you take advantage of the ongoing improvements in modern operating systems and modern hardware," a Microsoft spokeswoman emailed to Computerworld.

"Regarding Windows Vista, our decision with IE9 was not to build to the lowest common denominator," she said. "With IE9 we made the decision to help unlock the best Web experience possible, which means taking advantage of everything around the browser -- including Windows 7 and modern PC hardware."

In some ways, this is a positive move by Microsoft to help prevent another case of Windows XP – needing to support an OS that was past its prime.

Suits me fine!

Anything that can encourage people to stay reasonably up-to-date and stop them from using decade old software is good news.

...not that I'm saying Vista is 10 years old, but you get me!

This is rubbish, Vista and 7 are the same damn O/S under the skin. Meh people will make a hack, its like when MS sabotaged their stuff to work with XP but refuse to install on 2000 (same O/S under the skin) so people forced it.

IMO this will just have more people using out of date browsers then upgrading their O/S.

I'll bet new versions of Firefox, Chrome and Opera will continue to work on Vista so does it really matter? Not to me anyway.

I don't really get why people think it's somehow bad policy not to support XP anymore.

At some point, you have to make a choice: do I continue to support an old OS even when it forces me to either leave out features or spend a lot of time trying to get these features to work on an old OS?

MS said no, and that's their decision. It means they can get a better browser out of the door with less effort and if they think that more important than supporting a dying OS that is only used by corporate users these days (who don't update their browsers often anyway).

Face it, XP has had its time. It was probably the best MS release ever, but it is no longer secure or feature rich enough to matter.

And Vista? Vista failed and MS at least has the balls to admit it.

Agree except XP being best ever. I (believe it or not) skipped XP...

I don't understand why people say Vista failed, maybe a bad release but failed? I use it everyday, no real problems at all.

Vista's bad release was indeed responsible for most of the negative comments it gets to this day, but there were other things.

XP had very modest system demands, while Vista placed immense strain on PC's of the day. The then emerging netbook craze didn't improve things. Windows 7 is only as demanding as Vista (and is better optimised for low end hardware) and was released a few years later, that says enough.

Second, Vista suffered from very long boot and shutdown times. Not hugely important, but such little things color a persons day to day experience.

And then there's just the fact that Windows bashing is so fashionable (I fall victim to the desire every now and then too) - after all, there's the shiny Mac OS X and Linux, the dream of every security guy, geek and digital hipster.
