Intel's 3GIO Approved
A while back, it was assumed that either Intel or AMD would win the war in taking the baton from the tired old PCI interconnect standard. High-tech aficionados seemed to religiously anticipate either HyperTransport or 3GIO. However, since PCI-SIG unanimously approved 3GIO on Friday, everyone has more questions than answers. For one thing, it looks like HyperTransport is on its way into devices while Intel won't even have a completed specification for 3GIO until about four months from now, according to an article on EETimes.com . To make things even more confusing, another story on EETimes.com a while back said that 3GIO and HyperTransport may even be complementary standards that address different time frames. A story on The Inquirer also mentions that the two transport methods could co-exist, along with reminding us that AMD is a member of the PCI-SIG. The story's not over yet folks, it just doesn't all quite make sense right now.
