Intel to Introduce GPGPU Functions Into Westmere

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Intel figures that two heads are better than one, so why not use both?

Despite Intel's shelving of Larrabee (at least what we knew of the first version), the company still sees a future in offloading tasks to the GPU.

According to X-bit labs, Intel said last week that its upcoming Westmere processors will offload some of the video transcoding duties from the CPU over to the integrated GPU.

Both the Clarkdale desktop and Arrandale notebook will feature a dual-core 32nm CPU and a 45nm GPU on the same chip (but not the same die). Intel did say that systems shipping with Clarkdale and Arrandale chips won't initially support such GPGPU functions, but it will come at a later date through a driver update.

Of course, those with much beefier graphics chips from AMD or Nvidia will likely have little use for what Intel's IGP can do, but it's a good signal from Intel that the chip giant still believes in GPGPU utility.

I think Intel would be safer leaving the CPU to do the job rather than their "xtreme" (ly crap) graphics units.

However u take, it's not always in the performance, it's all about the moeny!!!! In this case, when you buy CPU that have integrated GPU, all other low end GPUs are left behind. and, you must admit: sales of LOW END GPUs in numbers are much higher than any others. you won't fint intel cpu on the laptop or desktop with nvidia/amd gpu as it is now. intel will gain much higher market share and on the end, Nvidia will have to do only HIGH END GPUs if they don't find other strong market... Amd and Intels as it's looks now, are winners, nVidia loses and that is not a good thing.

Hmmm, I seem to remember such things being promised before.Driver updates to unlock aditional features i mean. Dont think the record here is too great, anyway i dont think i like the idea of paying for something that A. wont work at first B. might not even work later and C. will probably be about as good as a chocolate fireguard when/if it does.
