Intel to subsidize Samsung Rambus DRAM fab
Intel Corp. will subsidize South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.'s production of Rambus DRAM memory. Intel Fellow and memory roadmap specialist, Pete MacWilliams, said the money will go to buy back-end testers needed to qualify the increased chip production. He also said that production of the chips must begin now if memory is to be ready for Q2 and Q3 this year.
Samsung recently announced it could produce cheaper RDRAM for the PC market and, with the Intel subsidy, will expand monthly output of 128M RDRAM to at least 10 million in March and then to 20 million per month later this year. Subsidies to chip makers are meant to increase production and lower unit costs as equipment investments are capitalized and production outputs are improved.
