Intel to make chipset for lower-cost RDRAM
Jack Robertson of EBN reports that Samsung Electronics Corp. has developed the previously rumored four-memory-bank Direct Rambus DRAM chip that, in volume production, may compare in price to SDRAM. The cost savings come, reportedly, from reductions in chip size.
Intel and Samsung both say four-bank RDRAM chips will at least equal the performance of current 32-bank Direct Rambus DRAM, designed with servers in mind. The chipset is scheduled for release early next year. Intel says the chipset will support a single memory channel for mainstream PCs and a dual memory channel used by the Willamette P4.
