Intel to cut P4 prices up to 60 percent
The Register reports that Intel Corp. will institute dramatic price cuts along with the launch of its 1.7GHz Pentium 4, due in two weeks. The previously expected price was reportedly $637 but at least one Taiwanese site has posted a price 44 percent lower at $352. Register sources say that Intel will reduce the 1.5GHz P4 to $519 and the 1.4GHz to $375 next Sunday. On 23 April, the 1.7GHz P4 go on sale for $701, not the $776 indicated by the roadmap. On 29 April, if the Register is reading things correctly, the price will be cut to $361. Simultaneously, the 1.5GHz P4 will be cut to $256 and the 1.4GHz to $193.
Tony Smith speculates that these major price cuts may be just what Rambus DRAM, currently the only memory supported by the P4, needs to compete with the budget priced DDR DRAM.
