Intel Slashes Pentium 4, Celeron Prices
Intel Corp. cut prices on several desktop processors by between 17 and 27 percent, clearing a path for its 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 to march through on Thursday.
AMD, meanwhile, was supposed to have reduced prices on several of its slower Athlon XP's, said Linda Kohout, mobile launch manager for AMD, in an interview on Monday. However, the cuts have apparently not officially taken place, and AMD officials were unable to confirm the reductions when asked for comment Tuesday.
Intel reduced prices on its fastest Pentium 4 models, slashing the price on the 2.8 GHz desktop Pentium 4 by 21 percent to $401. Intel also reduced the price of the 2.66 GHz and 2.60 GHz Pentium 4 by 24 percent, to an identical price of $305. Both chips had previously been priced at $401.
