Intel short of 1GHz notebook chips
Despite reduced PC chip demand, Intel Corp. has announced that it will not be able to deliver enough 1GHz mobile Pentium III processors to meet its customers' demands. CNet News reports that several PC makers were contacted by Intel late Monday with the news that supplies of the month-old 1GHz mobiles would not flow freely until late May. As a result, Dell Computer and Gateway are emphasizing other computers.
While Intel reports the source of the shortage as stronger than expected demand, some PC makers refute that and Mercury Research analyst Dean McCarron blames lower-than-expected yields of the 1GHz processor, as is often the case in the beginning of a chip's life cycle.
