Intel revs up 1.5GHz chip

Looking to recapture the speed title from rival AMD, Intel announced plans to ship 1GHz processors by the third quarter of the year.

The company also surprised industry officials attending the Intel Developer Forum by demonstrating for the first time its next-generation Willamette processor running at 1.5 GHz.

The 32-bit processor's chipset, code-named Tehama, will support a 400MHz system bus and dual-channel RDRAM memory.

Intel has not said yet how fast Willamette will be at introduction, but officials said the company will increase its manufacturing capacity in order to ship "hundreds of thousands of units" by the end of the year. Meanwhile, limited numbers of its 1GHz Pentium III chip will begin shipping "shortly."
