by - source: Tom's Hardware

Intel has released its fastest Pentium III processor and a new high-speed version of its Celeron MPU for sub-$1,000 PCs.

Leading computer makers, including IBM, Compaq, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard immediately announced new PCs, workstations and servers based on the new processors.

The new high-end Pentium III operates at 600 MHz and the fast Celeron chip runs at 500 MHz.

With the midsummer introduction, Intel is taking aim at the back-to-school PC shopping season, which now ranks second in size behind the end of the year holiday season.

The 600-MHz Pentium III processor is priced at $669 each in quantities of 1,000, while the 500-MHz sells for $167 in similar lots. Both are available now, Intel said.
