Santa Clara (CA) - Intel has notified motherboard manufacturers of an ICH6 I/O hub defect in its recently released 915 chipset, formerly known as Grantsdale. The company confirmed that it has recalled all chipsets affected.

The problem originates in an "anomaly" in the manufacturing process and affected a "limited number of chipsets", the company said on Friday. According to spokesperson Christian Anderka, a piece of foil which should have been removed from the ICH6 was not removed completely which could result in leakage current in the Real Time Clock circuit and potentially stop a motherboard from booting.

On Friday it was not clear when the problem was detected. Digitimes reported that several sources in Asia-Pacific confirmed the issue.

Intel said that it has fixed the problem and that affected were recalled. Anderka was not able to say how many defective chipsets in which geogrpahies were shipped.

"We believe that basically no affected chipsets have reached the end user," Anderka said. Users who have bought a PC equipped with a 915 chipset affected by the problem, could contact their manufacturer and exchange the product.
