Intel plans cheaper 1.3GHz P4
Citing analysts and memory suppliers, Jack Robertson writes that Intel Corp. will introduce a less-expensive 1.3 GHz Willamette Pentium 4 at the end of this January. The chip will serve as a stopgap until the mainstream Northwood P4 comes out midyear. Robertson says the growing threat of Advanced Micro Devices' Athlon processor is forcing the move. Bert McComas of InQuest Research says that it would also act as a kind of recyling program for chips that have failed to pass bin-out testing for higher-speed processors. He also says that the price of the 1.3 GHz Pentium 4 will be $410, over twice the cost of the 1.2 GHz Athlon.
