Intel executives say plummeting PC prices have just about hit rock bottom.

With many PCs already selling in the $400 range, it is unlikely that prices will drop by more than perhaps another $50, according to Pat Gelsinger, an Intel vice president and general manager of the company's Desktop Products Group.

Gelsinger says that consumers are unlikely to see a full-fledged, Windows-based PC for $199 anytime soon, unless it is accompanied with a steep rebate or discount.

Intel, for one, is no advocate of further PC price erosion. "I don't think that it's in Intel's best interest to expedite the decline of ASPs (average selling prices) in the PC industry," Gelsinger said.
