Intel makes storage standard open source
Intel Corp. will share the source code for its Internet SCSI specification (iSCSI) that combines the popular SCSI interface with Ethernet technology. It lets servers exchange data from storage devices using IP-based networks and could reduce other companies' need for expensive proprietary technologies for linking storage systems. Cisco has also announced that it will allow the use of its iSCSI driver software.
If the industry adapted an open-source standard, Intel would be in a better position to sell network products. Intel is leading an industry iSCSI group to speed next-generation standards to extend Ethernet to include networked storage.
