Intel licenses SiS for P4 chipset
Promoting the adoption of its Pentium 4 chips, Intel Corp. licensed the core-logic chipset technology to Silicon Integrated Systems Inc. SiS is the second Taiwanese third-party chipset maker given Intel's blessing this month. Acer Laboratories Inc. was licensed in February as part of an effort to keep chipset makers from turning to Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Athlon CPU.
VIA Technologies Inc. is the only major Taiwanese chipset maker not licensed for the P4, reportedly because VIA is putting together its own processor that will compete directly against Intel CPUs.
