Intel Corp. has announced an alliance with Microsoft, QNX Software Systems, Wind River Systems, IBM, Fonix and Lernout & Hauspie to make in-car computers. The "telematic" systems will provide hands-free cell phone operation, navigation assistance, emergency services, entertainment and other capabilities in the later half of 2002, according to the company.
Intel is attempting to catch General Motors' OnStar, the current leader in the arena. The company will work with a variety of consumer electronics companies, including Sony and Clarion, to develop in-car computers for a variety of markets and budgets. The simplest systems would cost from $100 to $200.
