Intel completes Merced design

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Intel says it has finished design work on its 64-bit Merced chip.

The company will produce samples of the new processor this quarter.

Intel has said that it expects to begin manufacturing Merced chips in high volumes by mid-2000.

Hampered by numerous delays, Merced is designed to compete at the high end of the computing market, with chips such as the UltraSparc from Sun Microsystems and the Alpha from Compaq Computer.

Intel has achieved the "tape-out" stage of manufacturing, meaning that the chip's design has been completed and sent to the factory.
