Intel's 820 chipset is due to debut next Monday, but the product is not facing an overflow of enthusiasm from PC manufacturers.
The 820's use of Rambus memory technology has proved to be a turn-off for some PC makers, who so far prefer cheaper SDRAM.
Sources say Intel may be scaling back its production plans for the chip - again. Intel previously caved in to OEMs' desires to opt for conventional memory running at higher speeds rather than adopting Rambus technology. The 820 chipset itself was delayed three months.
