Intel chip uses less than 1-V
Intel Corp. is touting the first PC CPU that operates with less than 1 volt of power while consuming less than a watt. Analysts believe the chips have been rushed to market by the threat posed to Intel by Transmeta Corp.
The Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Pentium III is one of a new line for sub-notebooks weighing less than three pounds. The series uses Intel's SpeedStep technology to operate at less than 1 V at 300MHz under battery power and at 500MHz when plugged into external power. An Ultra Low Voltage Celeron for value sub-notebooks also runs at 500MHz. In quantities, the mobile PIII will cost $208 while the Celeron is $118. Both are fabricated using 0.18-micron technology.
