Intel aims for 1GHz in 2000

Intel will reportedly unveil plans for a 1,000MHz Pentium III chip early next year.

The Santa Clara, Calif., chip maker will present a paper on a Coppermine-based 1GHz processor at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference in February.

While Intel first showed off a Pentium III early this year using a cooling technology to allow the chip to reach 1GHz, the latest design would run at normal room temperature.

The company is expected to announce a 750MHz and possibly an 800MHz Pentium III chip on Monday, thereby regaining the title of "fastest chip" from rival AMD, which is expected to announce an 800MHz Athlon chip in early January.
