Intel adds flash to handheld PC

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Intel is introducing a new Strataflash flash-memory technology designed to help create lighter handheld PCs with a longer battery life and greater data integrity.

The chip company made the announcement at the Windows CE Developers Conference in Denver.

Intel officials say the Strataflash technology, which allows simultaneous reading and writing of the memory, will eliminate the need for mask ROM, removable flash-storage cards, and most battery-backed DRAM from a range of handheld PCs and mini-notebooks. Persistent Storage Management (PSM) software provides the code and data partitioning for the flash memory.

Flash memory reduces the number of components needed for a typical handheld PC device. Other advantages of the flash memory include field programmability and reliable nonvolatile storage.
