Infiniband spec due Tuesday
The Infiniband Trade Association, a merger of two earlier groups of tech giants working on a networking standard for copper and fiber-optic cable, is releasing specification version 1.0 Tuesday, perhaps changing the way big server products look and operate forever. The architecture, reportedly supporting 2.5 to 4-Gbit/second wire signaling rate, could do away with the need for huge stand-alone servers and usher in the era of clustered components. One analyst says that Infiniband "allows you to build supercomputer, mainframe-class processing power out of a Lego-block kind of approach, instead of having just one giant piece of equipment."
