Infineon Banks $3.5 million in Rambus Fraud Suit

by - source: Tom's Hardware

David vs. Goliath. Ali vs. Frasier. The Kings vs. the Lakers. No legal matchup this year has more tech industry implications than the battle between Infineon Technologies and Rambus. While other memory producers rolled over and wrote checks to Rambus, Infineon truly went the extra mile in not only standing up to Rambus' patent infringement lawsuit, but in filing counter claims of fraud and racketeering against the company. The judge in the case dismissed all of Rambus' claims last week , but decided to put Infineon's allegations before a jury . Today, Infineon announced that the jury in the Eastern District of Virginia found Rambus liable for fraud and awarded Infineon $3.5 million in punitive damages. Infineon's counterclaims alleged that Rambus subverted the open standards process rules governing the Memory Standards Committee of the Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) by not disclosing relevant patents and patent applications. Expect more legal shenanigans as those who paid royalties to Rambus try to recoup their ill-spent dollars. Other stories about Infineon's victory can be seen at The Register and EETimes.com .
