Is In-Flight Wi-Fi Now Threatened by Terrorists?
Bomb scare turns renews questions of wireless devices while in flight.
In-flight Wi-Fi is a modern wonder. In an age where electronics are suspiciously inspected in airports, getting to access the internet while at higher than 30,000 feet seems like a small miracle. That's why Virgin America is one of the preferred ways to fly here at Tom's, but sadly the wonders of Wi-Fi on a plane could be threatened by paranoia over terrorism.
New Scientist believes that recent laser printer cartridge bomb that had travelled undetected on aircraft to the UK and to Dubai, but luckily went undetonated, could stir reasons for a further clamp down on wireless electronics in air travel.
The bombs were hooked up to cell phones, but they did not contain SIM cards, making them useless for making or receiving calls. This nearly rules out that the phones would use cell technology to activate the explosives.
What the discovery could do, however, is stall or even kill off the development and adoption of wireless device use while in flight. For gadget lovers, it would be a case where the terrorists win.

Governments use our fear to manipulate us, the more we live in fear the more they are able to erode our rights all in the name of "protecting us"

I am from the UK, and have lived with the threat of terrorism since I was a mall child in the 70's, first with the IRA (and other splinter groups and now from Muslim Extremist's, the threat is no bigger now than it has ever been before in fact it is much less, seems in the 80's we had bombs going off all the time, both in N.I. and here in the main land UK.
All that has changed, is the way the government and the media try to whip up fear and frenzy, erode our rights, take away our freedoms and make us feel paranoid and under siege. But the chance of being involved in an actual terrorist event is so tiny it is unbelievable. The last actual event that took life here in the UK was in 2005 in which just over 50 people lost their lives, very tragic, but that is an average of 10 people a year in the last 5 years, for goodness sake we have nearly 200 people die each year in horse riding accidents, should we go out and shoot all the horses? throw people in detention camps for petting a horses?
Of course that seems extreme and ridiculous, but my point is we need to put terrorism in perspective, if you live in fear and destroy your way of life because of terrorists then they have already won, terrorism - to create terror, I for one wont live in fear or alter my life to accommodate these people, nor do I want governments trying to make me a prisoner because of others
It is about time we as a people said enough is enough, not just to terrorists but to our governments as well....
Rant over
"the threat is no bigger now than it has ever been before in fact it is much less, seems in the 80's we had bombs going off all the time, both in N.I. and here in the main land UK."
Apologize to that nails head.
@ prince of dreams. The problem with you analogy here mate is that horses don't set off nuclear warheads in cities like London. This will happen the minute terrorists can get their hands on them hence all the extra security.
Times have changed as well the IRA back in the day only had access to semtex and explosive types of materials, modern terrorists have and will use nuclear material. Also you are only stating the terrorists attacks that have succeeded and not those attacks that were foiled by our intelligence agencies. They have stated they are following more than 100 potential attacks at any one time. I for one feel safer with tighter security.
hanrak, sorry pal but the terrorists have beaten you into the ground. They've won over you. You lose!
princeofdreams is spot on. I'm from the UK and have been saying the same thing for years. The best thing to do with terrorists is ignore them and carry on.
Terrorists havent taken away any of my rights...but my Govt. has.
Back when the IRA was bombing us monthly (oh and thanks to our US cousins for sponsoring them, at least we had 20+ years of experience dealing with terrorists thanks to you) we had a little outrage in the press and then it was "carry on. get on with it!".
Someone will always have a chip on their shoulder about something. If they are not mature enough to discuss and deal with it in a civilised manner then ignore them.
When the 7/7 bombings happend there was my Govt saying that the terrorists would never change our freedoms or way of life. Then two weeks later we had a raft of restrictive legislation brought in effectively reducing our rights and freedoms.
Well thats a smart way of dealing with it.
Fear is not the key. Thats what terrorists want (the clue is in their name). Deal with them using secret methods that are not apparent to the public (ala how we dealt with the IRA) by all means but you dont have to broadcast "Threat/Fear Levels".
FEAR! FEAR! FEAR!!! is not the solution our Govts should be providing us with.
I have never been afraid of terrorism. If it happens to me, thats life.
Well said Princeofdreams!
The real aim of terrorists isn't to kill people, that is just a means to an end. Killing a tiny number of people in a very public and dramatic way puts a distorted sense of fear and risk into more people than they could ever hope to influence directly. The terrorists are weak, their feeble plots are being foiled constantly and their ability to affect the lives of anybody else in the world is insignificant - save for those extremely unlucky people who find themselves randomly hurt or killed by some senseless violent act. The likelihood of such events is comparable to deaths by lightning-strikes. Their effects upon this world would be almost meaningless and insignificant. Unfortunately the terrorists have very large and powerful co-conspirators and their tactics have recruited an army of unsuspecting volunteers. Governments seeking increased control and power and the hordes of people screaming "I'll submit to any inconvenience, any violation of my privacy, any loss of my freedom because it will keep me safe!" - Of course it won't keep them safe: the risks to each individual are already negligible yet at the population level some incidents are inevitable because sooner or later one a terrorists will "get lucky". To them it is just a numbers game. In isolation these terrorist acts could do nothing but kill a few innocent people, yet governments and individuals are helping these terrorists spread the damage beyond those few victims to billions of people. Thus a small cell composed of only a few individuals can induce global hysteria from very small and petty acts. This is how and why terrorism works.
I will not be complicit in these acts, I am not afraid. Those who push for greater controls, those who willingly sacrifice privacy and freedom - they are terrorist collaborators.
Lmfao... This is just easy to take advantage of for a govt/corp. "Soo, if we just pay mercenaries or some black ops group to set off explosions and then frame them as "innocent drills gone wrong" (in case we get caught) we can just forcefully pass any draconian legislation we want; make tons of money for our privately owned security CCTV firms? WOW let the bombs away!
OR, it's some "terrorist" who choose the most elaborate and overly complex bombing locations and technology, Vs just walking into a busy crowd and BOOM; LIKE THEY NORMALLY DO if they were REAL "terrorists." COme on people think logically here. If some corp exec/owner/elite, wtf ever, doesn't give a shat about the lowest paid employee's rights for health care and cost of living, do you think they care if these people also get blown up by their funding these private black op groups? NOPE, since they do BOTH; pay you squat and threaten your life around every supposed corner?
What a joke it's the UPPER CLASSES terrorizing the "workers" aka SERFS! We still live in the feudal society, just better technology and the scientific method has made the lower classes lives much more bearable vs the disease, electricity-less past. DUH? An FBI "agent" is nothing more than the Knight class, the NSA are the personal guard, the Beat cop is the Brown shirt used to intimidate the serfs... so elementary for people that paid attention in HISTORY "CLASS!" Open your eyes for once lol.
RFID and force cashless society is coming next = no chip = no service or they'll just turn your's off. Lol... ENjoy gullible sheeple.
Just like your parents learned to be racist and hate people bc of some damn skin color, lmfao... You're being taught that BIG and increased Govt presence in your life is "okay," "acceptable," and "WELCOMED!" Unplug your lazy asses from the TV and start reading books, or watching alternative media; what do you believe more; some $500K yr earned talking puppet on TV censoring critical details and giving you strategically selected sound bites, out of context OR someone's LIVE cel-phone video/HD cam showing your fellow citizens getting beat up for expression their RIGHT to protest and free speech? It' IS happening and it's coming towards you regardless of how far and fast you run away from it: FACE IT NOW before they take all your shit, land... you'll have no where to run if every damn corner has a bio-metric scanning CCTV that recognized bio-rhythmic MOVEMENTS regardless of clothing or masks lol. THIS is wtf you people want to live? Screw that, let me have my house, yard, fence and GTFO of my life agent Smith.
Damn plebs and serfs are going to have us ALL turned back into SLAVES of the govt/state if we keep giving up all these rights your relatives DIED FOR to GIVE TO YOU!? MAN UP or get on the train to the ovens!!!... Only happened mere decades ago, and it'll happen again but it won't be ovens, it'll be DRUGS that fsck your mind and emo's up so you kill yourselves or are too feeble to think about escape/fighting.
See this is how SMART + deviant people think; they think they are superior to you bc they can trick you or out think you. They are Darwinists; smarter and crafty is "right" to them, they HATE group decisions and sharing resources, they want it ALL to themselves and the more cunning they are, the more their peers respect them and want to emulate the top guys behavior to get at his throat next.
